When I was young (OMG now I’m also going on like that…) I had a NES box. And almost every game from the house of Konami had a back door that always worked after the same principle.
up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A
This “cheat” executed different things, depending on the game, sometimes just an easter egg, sometimes a real cheat (extra lives, power ups… the usual). The code sequence became so famous that other producers used it too (sometimes with slight variations). A list can be found for example on Wikipedia.
All that would of course not merit a blog entry, were it not for a quite interesting development. An increasing number of websites hide easter eggs behind a Konami Code. Want to see examples? Just visit http://jquery.com and enter the code.
JQuery is not the only site that does that though. By now there are many sites using the code. A site list is to be found on Konami Code Sites, to gain access to the site the code must be entered.
Try it, I have all but made it a habit to enter the code on every major site.
To include a Konami Code in your own site, you can use e.g. Jquery. Joe Mastey has written a small JQuery plugin.
